Household insurance is actually a broad term that can cover a vast array of insurance coverages. Household insurance policies can cover the following and more: contents and possession, buildings without content, pet coverage, garden coverage, legal services coverage and home emergency coverage. The most common are building insurance and contents insurance - although these two can be bought in conjunction with each other.
In many cases, if you took out a mortgage to pay for your home, your mortgage lender will have insisted you take out at least building insurance. Building insurance, depending on the coverage, will insure just your home against natural disasters or accidents, such as a tree falling against your home or accidents such as a fire. However, it is important to look closely at the natural disaster section of your coverage to make sure that you are covered against an event that is likely to occur in your area. For example, if floods are quite common in the area where you live, make sure your building or home policy covers floods. If it doesn't, then ask your insurance company to add it to your policy. You may want to omit another coverage if it is an event that doesn't occur in your area, such as earthquakes or tornadoes. Also, building insurance does not in most cases cover your personal possessions in the house. Some policies may cover contents to a very limited amount, so it is important to take out separate contents insurance or have that added on to your building insurance.
Contents insurance, which can be part of your household insurance, covers your personal possessions against theft, damage and accidental damage. Some policies will simply cover you for a blanket amount, such as £25,000, dividing this amount among various items like furniture, clothes, appliances etc. If you have especially valuable items, such as antique furniture, jewellery or artwork, make sure you get separate coverage for these, as a content insurance in most cases will not cover such items.
