Building insurance is a general term that can cover a range of property insurance categories. Straight-forward building insurance will cover a property or building and/or extensions such as garages, gazebos or swimming pools against damage or natural disaster. These types of events are out of your control but you will be left to clean up the mess. Fortunately, you can buy insurance for these possible situations, since having to pay for such damage out of your own pocket can be extremely expensive. A building insurance policy will pay you to fix or repair or rebuild any damage.

Building insurance can include coverage for content or personal possessions. This could include theft or burglary coverage, if your items are stolen due to a break-in. Other policies will cover you against accidental damage of your personal possessions, such as blowing up a TV or cracking a sink. Most policies will have a 'new for old' clause, whereby items can be replaced by the exact same item or model as the damaged item. Some insurance companies will also allow you to upgrade to a newer model, you just have to pay the difference.

Building insurance does not necessarily have to be for the home you live in, it could be for a rental property as well. In some cases this is called landlord insurance or rental property insurance. It will cover the property against natural disaster. It is probably a good idea to warn your tenants that your policy will not cover their personal contents, but in some cases will cover your contents if you are renting the house or flat furnished. It is advisable to check if your insurance company first, before assuming that your contents are insured under your building insurance policy.
